“Leave us alone, please,” I asked Nora as I stood in my sister’s room the next morning. I suspected she knew everything already. If Janna hadn’t told her, she probably figured it out herself; she was a bright young lady. Servants, especially handmaidens, nursing mothers and valets, knew almost everything about the royal family. Surely, she knew Janna’s period was late.

God!

Thinking of that made my blood boil in my veins, but now was not the time. I had to stay composed.

“Your Highness?” Nora looked at Janna, waiting for her approval. She seemed scared and unsure she should leave us alone. It was as if she thought I could hurt her, because apparently; she had no idea how much my sister meant to me.

“Do as the Crown Prince says, Nora,” Janna said quietly, her eyes downcast.

“Yes, Your Highness.” Nora hesitantly left the room, closing the door behind her.

“You committed a grave sin, but I’m not the one to judge. I’m not perfect or sinless, nor am I going to give you a speech. What you did is punishable by death…” Janna looked up with fearful, questioning eyes. It hurt she thought even for one moment I would agree to that. I had to reassure her. “… but I will not let that happen.”

“Mazen...” she whispered.

“Let me finish,” I interrupted. “You know your body is sacred, and only your husband gets to touch it. Then you do that with someone you know can never be your husband? I still can’t wrap my mind around it, Janna! I don’t know how you could do something like that!”

My sister looked down again in shame. I hated doing this to her, but I had to say something.

“I’m sorry…” Her small voice twisted my heart.

“I know you are, but that won’t stop the family from killing you. I tried to think of a plan, and this is the only thing I could come up with: you tell our parents that you want to finish your studies in London,” I said, and Janna gasped, seemingly terrified. It confirmed that she really didn’t want to lose the baby since she looked scared by the idea of going to London. She probably thought I was going to do what she asked last night and send her there for an abortion.

“You tell them you don’t like school here, and think you will have a better chance there learning new things that you could use to benefit the Kingdom later.

“I will find you a place to stay when you start showing. After the delivery, the father can raise him or her, because despite everything, he has a right to the baby, and eventually, you will need to return to the Kingdom.” It was the truth; the asshole had a right to his baby, despite my fantasy of grasping his throat and squeezing until the last breath left his mouth.

“You also may keep the baby with you, but it will be difficult. I haven’t worked it out thoroughly, yet. But this is what I have for now, the only thing that doesn’t involve killing either you or the baby.
